Besides
designing, Jahanara Deepali & Hemal is a name synonymous
with crafts revival and is well-known in Gujarat for the
unveiling of the dieing arts. Since the beginning, they
firmly believe that there is an enormous wealth that lies
untapped in our past. With this realization, they initiated
and involved themselves in deep research of our rich culture.
They started their research work in the year 1994 and
almost completed in 2001. During these years, they traveled
in the internal and remote parts of almost all Indian
states and personally studied the original arts as well
as finding actual 'Karigars' and 'Ustaads' (artisans).
In the context of a particular states culture, they sincerely
tried and took up the challenge to restructure, revive
and reproduce the dieing arts of different regions of
India.
Out of these, some of the traditional motifs and old art
forms of embroidery are very rare to see in the recent
times. They have visited various museums and referred
and studied many art-related books, old paintings, carpets,
antique article-like 'Moghut's', caps, sword-cases, 'Mojri's'
and the garments of the 'Raja-Maharaja's'. Besides these,
they also went through old sculptures, contemporary styles
of furniture and antique jewellery. Inspired by all these,
they translated the theme of these art forms, which relate
to today's fashion clothing.
The outcome of this mixture and the mix-n-match theory
of both designers resulted in fabulous embroidery, which
is the strength of Deepali & Hemal. Both also make
real embroidery that uses real gold, silver and real jari.
Despite all their efforts and reaching a certain landmark,
both still believe that their search is not over yet and
there is a lot more to be unveiled in the future.
